Associate Scientist Molecular Bacteriology & Bioinformatics Leiden (LabResource)

In this role you will be responsible for developing & performing experiments in the context of bacterial cultivation & strain identification using molecular biological & biochemical techniques. A solid understanding of bioinformatics / statistics is necessary since you will use bioinformatics on complex datasets to evaluate results and design new experiments. You will work in a multidisciplinary research team that identifies, designs, produces and characterizes new vaccine candidates. Bioinformatics, functional genomics, molecular engineering, and biochemistry are key R&D activities. Core responsibilities include: o Practical realization of the research (experiments and tests) under the supervision of (senior) scientist(s) o Documentation of experiments and results in lab notebooks and full reports o Evaluation of results together with the supervisor (scientist / senior scientist) o Responsible for writing SOP`s/ protocols.  For this position we are looking for an experienced professional with the following background: BSc/MSc degree in Microbiology / Molecular biology Your expertise lies in the following areas: bacteriology, molecular biology & bioinformatics Working experience with bacterial cultivation and strains identification, genetic manipulation of bacteria Molecular biology techniques: DNA-, RNA-, Protein isolation and the associated analytical methods Demonstrable experience with bioinformatics (e.g. blast, building alignments and phylogenetic trees, making genome assemblies) Affinity with one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Perl, C/C++, Java) Basic understanding of statistics and use of statistics software (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, Excel) Good communication skills in English, written and spoken.
